- A friend of a friend in Portishead has put together an appeal to help the Philippines. Here it is in her own words:
"I hope you will forgive me for asking but I am helping to fill a container, or preferably several containers to leave as soon as possible for the Philippines. I will collect anything you can give which will help someone who has nothing – please think deep, old shoes, old anything that works which you may throw away could be wonderful for them. Many people there have nothing. If you can help my telephone numbers are: 0117973 0639 or 07866317148 – give me a call and let me know what you can contribute. I include this quote from an email sent by my ex husband with whom I have been to the Philippines many times for business and for pleasure: Lorraine Barnett @ 22 Canynge Square, Bristol BS8 3LA “As you are aware, millions of people in the Philippines have lost everything in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan. I have spent a lot of time there, particularly in Cebu (one of the worst affected areas) and want to do something to help in a practical way. Therefore I sought advice from a close friend and business colleague, an American who lives and works in Cebu. Whilst the aid agencies are doing their utmost to provide immediate help to those in desperate need, a lot of the money donated to these charities is consumed in administration fees and, sadly, corruption is rife. As a result of the conversation with our friend, he suggested that we organise a container to be shipped to the Philippines which can be packed with used clothing and recycled household items to help make these people’s lives a little easier. If we have a good response to the appeal we will send a second, third and fourth container or as many as we can fill. Obviously, timing is critical and we need to put the first container on the water as soon as possible, ideally by the end of November. Donations must be bagged or boxed, not loose. We were advised that if we wanted to make a monetary donation and avoid fees and likely corruption, we could donate directly to three suggested local Christian charities. If this is of interest we can forward the details so cash donations can be sent directly to them. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter: we hope you’ll be able to help us. Here are ideas for used and old items for donation. Please remember that many people have lost EVERYTHING and all they have are the clothes on their backs. Don't worry if goods are shabby or tired-looking. Anything you want to discard that could be useful will be gratefully received.” • Clothing (adult, child & baby sizes) • Shoes, sandals & trainers (all sizes) • Blankets • Pillows • Bed linen • Towels • Tents • Torches • Hairbrushes • Old bicycles/scooters • School books • Crockery • Cutlery • Glassware • Plastic/tin plates & cups • Kitchen utensils (i.e. pots & pans, wooden spoons, large bowls) • Brooms • Buckets • Prams, pushchairs, baby slings • ANYTHING YOU FEEL COULD BE USEFUL THANK YOU! - B.
